Adam Colagrossi was born on January 9, 1900 in the small town of San Marco La Catola, in the province of Foggia, Italy.
He attended school, studied music and at the age of five went to a local furniture shop to learn the trade. His duties were basically to keep the shop clean, prepare the glue pot and run errands. As he grew older he was taught to sharpen tools. He went on to cutting dovetails and other joints. He eventually made and finished furniture. He also was an accomplished artist, designer and wood carver.. |
He came to the United States in 1924 and settled in Brooklyn, New York. He worked in New York and soon opened his own shop which he named Salfa Roma, a name he found on an ancient gold Roman coin.
He took in his cousins as partners and had a successful restoration business. He later sold his business to his cousins, moved to Waterbury and opened a restoration shop where he actively restored furniture until 1990.
His son, Adam Jr. followed him in the restoration business and so did his grandson, Carl Colagrossi
